During the celebration of the Last
supper Jesus did a very, very special act. And what was that? He washed the
feet of his Apostles. The task of washing the feet is the work of the slaves.
Jesus who is Lord and teacher of the Apostles did the task of the lowliest people of his time- He
washed the feet of His Apostles. With
utmost act of humility which caught His
apostles by surprise. While they were at
table for supper Jesus , stood up ,took a towel which he wrapped around his
waist, then knelt down at the feet of
His Apostles and one by one he washed their feet and wiped them with the towel
he was wearing.(Jn.13:4-5)
And
Jesus simply said to them, “Do you understand what I have done to you?” …”I have
just given you an example that as I have done, you also may do.” (Jn.3
15) What was Jesus trying to
emphasize? It was not ,for us, to wash
each other’s feet literally. Instead, we
have to serve one another. Have we tried
“washing” the hands, the feet and the body especially of the sick and the aged?
