"I have come not to be served"

Jesus  said, “I have come not to be served but to serve.” (Mk.10:45) Let me ask you, what are the three–fold mission of Christ? He is a Prophet; a Priest;  and He is a  King. When we were baptized we became incorporated into Christ. We became united with the Lord and participated in the three-fold mission of Christ. If we would ask the Lord, what does it mean to be a king? Simple, you are a king if you serve. To rule is to serve. Jesus said, “…to give my life as a ransom for many.” We, too have to give to God and to all people our  life, our strength. But we can only do this if we are humble.

And if we are humble, we respect other people. Though one is in a higher station in life: better educated, materially richer, politically powerful, one has to give respect to fellow persons especially those who have lower station in life. You must always treat others with so much respect; with so much love; with so much kindness. If Jesus, who is the highest, the most powerful, and the source of all, being  the Creator of everything, what did He do? St. Paul  said, “Jesus emptied Himself, and He became one like us.” (Phil.2:7) Out of his love and unity for mankind, he is able to raise us up in our lowliness to the dignity of a child of God.  He showed respect and love  to both the poor and rich, the powerful  and the weak , the sick and the well, the officials and the  ordinary citizens, the sinners and the good. Even  those responsible for his sufferings and death, He treated them with love.
